ATEC on the move
Tuesday, June 30th, 2009 by LianneBrownEnvironmentalists and government officials from the Solomon Islands were the most recent beneficiaries of North Queensland’s unique tropical expertise.
A delegation from the Lake Tegano World Heritage Site Association (LTWHSA) and Solomon Island Government officials spent two weeks with staff from the Wet Tropics Management Authority exploring North Queensland’s Wet Tropics World Heritage area, learning how to effectively manage such a unique environment to ensure sustainable ecotourism and conservation practices are carried out.
The delegation, from the East Rennell area of Rennell Island in the Solomon Island group, reported to be impressed with the knowledge and experiences they took from their visit to the Cairns region and plan to share them with their community in East Rennell.
Also benefiting from what the region has to offer in the tropical expertise sphere are 10 tertiary students from Papua New Guinea, Kiribati and the Solomon Islands who are undertaking horticulture, hospitality, information technology and tourism studies at the Tropical North
Queensland TAFE in Cairns this year.
