Tender Notice (R4: YUS Monitoring)

Closing Date: 8 September 2009

Conservation International (CI) invites submission of expressions of interest for the provision of services to support ecological and socio-economic monitoring in the Yopno-Uruwa-Som (YUS) catchment of northern Papua New Guinea (PNG).

Conservation International is responsible for tendering and contracting specific project components for a BMU/KfW-funded project entitled Creating the YUS Conservation Area in Papua New Guinea.  Field implementation of project activities in PNG is coordinated by CI (with offices in Atherton, Cairns, Port Moresby, and Alotau) in partnership with the Woodland Park Zoo’s Tree Kangaroo Conservation Program  (TKCP), which has offices in Lae and Cairns.

Project
The YUS Project seeks to conserve forest carbon, endemic biodiversity, and ecosystem services, and to benefit local rural communities by providing income streams from sustainable activities that have low impact on traditional ways of life in the YUS ecosystem of Morobe Province of Papua New Guinea. This tender focuses on delivery of technical services related to ecological and socio-economic monitoring (R4), and is to be initiated once the tender is awarded, and continuing until the end of the program, in December 2011. The activities include: establishing a community-managed ecological monitoring regime within the YUS ecosystem, and establishing community-managed scoio-economic monitoring within the YUS communities.

CI is seeking a partner to help establish these field monitoring activities in the YUS ecosystem of northern Papua New Guinea. The successful completion of the tasks will require close consultation and collaboration with units of CI in the region and with TKCP in PNG and Queensland.

Conservation International is responsible for tendering and contracting specific project components for a BMU/KfW-funded project entitled Creating the YUS Conservation Area in Papua New Guinea.  Field implementation of project activities in PNG is coordinated by CI (with offices in Atherton, Cairns, Port Moresby, and Alotau) in partnership with the Woodland Park Zoo’s Tree Kangaroo Conservation Program  (TKCP), which has offices in Lae and Cairns.

Project

This tender focuses on delivery of technical services related to carbon and climate/ecological field science (R5), and is to be initiated once the tender is awarded, and continuing until the end of the program, in December 2011. The activities include: generating a new vegetation-cover layer for the YUS ecosystem; field measurement of standing carbon stocks for YUS; collaboration on the YUS climate, biodiversity, and subsistence agriculture transect; and an estimate of the potential carbon sequestration benefits of reforestation activities.

CI is seeking a partner to carry out these analytical and field science activities related to these science components of the YUS program. The successful completion of the tasks will require close consultation and collaboration with units of CI in the region and with CI Headquarters in Arlington, Virginia (USA).
